The goal of the project is to capture the experience with minimal interference to its surroundings. Scaffolding is used like a structure so that the focus from the city is not taken away; instead, the structure is designed to be invisible from a distance.
Scaffolding has been used for a very long time across the globe. Essentially, it is a temporary structure that supports people or materials during the construction process. However, there is no reason why scaffolding structures cannot be just as efficient, if not more efficient than other materials, in providing a flexible space.
This project is located in the city of Lisbon, Portugal, which has a rich place history and architecture with high contrast in elevations that allow for dynamic views. Using five different structural elements – steps, stage, void, enclosed space and ‘miradouro’, a space can be easily assembled and disassembled according to the needs. The challenge of Urban Platform is to design five different modules that are easy to build and disassemble, each able to transform into a fully immersive environment for events and activities without obstructing the historic elevation of the city.
