Tandem

Tandem is a motorcycle helmet that can be split into two ribbed helmets. It addresses the safety and wellbeing of pillion riders, who are commonly seen without head protection in subtropical countries.

Honourable Mention
Motorcycles are ubiquitous in subtropical areas. They represent the most convenient form of personal transportation. Unfortunately, for both contextual and economic reasons, there is a lack of helmets. Pillion riders are commonly seen without head protection. Tandem responds to this need.

The solution was to create two helmets from one by dividing the helmet into a male part and a female part. The parts nest together and can be worn as a single helmet. When separated, they create two helmets, each with a ribbed structure. This notion of ‘sharing’ provokes empathy; sharing protection encourages trust and possibly a better riding experience with an associated notion of equality. ‘Sharing risk and sharing protection.’

On hot days, Tandem can also be worn without its male part to allow airflow around the head. The male part can fit any age or head size through an adjustment of its span. The chinstrap contains a pocket for a mobile phone, allowing hands-free talk.
