red dot award: design concept 2009

Prometheus

Prometheus is a segmented camping light for mountain climbing teams. It allows them to share the load as well as the light.

Prometheus is a camping lantern for professional mountain climbers. It can be separated into parts, each able to function as an individual lamp, and reconnected to form a larger light source. When a team of people is climbing, each person can carry one part of Prometheus so that nobody’s load is too bulky or weighty. When the team convenes at their camping ground, all the parts can come together to create a large hanging lamp. An individual part can be disconnected for a trip to the toilet or for a patrol of the camping area. The concept sharing light stemmed from Prometheus – a Titan in Greek mythology who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to the mortal humans.
