2P Portable Restroom

The 2P is a dual-use portable restroom designed to counter the problems that arise due to massive attendance at popular outdoor events such as concerts, fairs, and festivals. Through its innovative placement of an external urinal behind each stall, the 2P promotes simultaneous usage per unit, drastically reducing wait time.

A large music festival such as Bonnaroo (held in Tennessee, USA) generates traffic of up to 80,000 people per half day. Recommendations suggest that Bonnaroo should rent up to 1,190 portable restroom units. This amounts to more than 26,000 square feet (or 2,415 square metres) set aside for the restroom area. Often, events are unable to meet these quotas due to cost or space constraints, resulting in long lines and rapidly degenerating hygienic conditions.

Through its innovative use and placement of an external urinal behind each stall, the 2P allows for two people to do their business simultaneously at a single unit. Their waste flows into a single tank. With long lines, impatience often leads to inappropriate behavior such as users urinating on the nearest structure or foliage. The simultaneous usage of the 2P drastically reduces wait times by redirecting most of the male population to the rear side of the units where they are able to start and finish much more rapidly than before. With the stalls reduced to essential toilet use, the interior is much cleaner and easier to manage.

The 2P's ability to accommodate more users with fewer units not only reduces the amount of space that events need to set aside for restrooms, but also cuts costs, allowing the extra budget to be spent elsewhere. With less units required per event, less are manufactured and transported. This greatly reduces the carbon footprint of portable restrooms.

The 2P's curved design, integrated into both its overall form and into its structural support, is reminiscent of water and gentle waves when multiple units are place side by side. The contrasting blue highlight of the urinal indicates use, making it easily recognisable and intuitive for all users. Arranged in rows, the 2P creates not only a natural private space for male users, but each adjacent unit provides privacy for the individual.
