peepo GPS is a navigation system for the visually impaired. Combined with the guide dog, it enables the independent exploration of unknown areas and freedom from reliance on other people.
The guide dog is a tried and trusted companion of the visually impaired, aiding mobility on regular routes. However, entirely independent navigation of new places is a different story. Only six per cent of guide dog owners venture to new destinations due to anxiety levels.
peepo GPS is a mobility aid for the visually impaired that resolves this dilemma. It allows for entirely independent navigation when seeking out new destinations. It is comprised of two devices. The first is a handheld GPS device that the user speaks into and confirms their destination. The second attaches to the guide dog’s leash handle and gives subtle guidance and reassurance by way of pulse zones at the fingertips: L (left), R (right), and F (forward). On arrival, the zones simultaneously pulse.
It is not intended that peepo GPS would replace the guide dog (of which there are approximately 15,000 in the UK, USA, and Canada). Rather, it is a product to complement the natural safety element that the guide dog provides. It makes use of technological advancement to maximise confidence with navigation. The simplicity of peepo GPS and its ease of use, combined with the unique skills of the guide dog, allow the user to go beyond everyday barriers while retaining their own safety zones.
After extensive research to make sure the right product was going to be created, a mini focus group was established for testing and feedback throughout the product design process. After trials in both the lab and the urban environment, improvements were made to the design – for example, the forwards reassurance vibration zone, the simple on/off/reset all-in-one button, an additional one-touch “return home same way” function, and a jaw limiter to allow for easier attachment to the leash handle.
