The process of waiting is a fact for all people who use public transportation systems. Travelling by plane, in particular, is getting more complex, and requires even longer waiting periods. Safety regulations, alterable flight information, physical stress, jetlag, the handling of one’s luggage, and long waiting periods for flight connections make the airport a ideal place in which to focus on improving the travel experience.
For regular economy-class passengers, waiting for a connecting flight is a hassle. The experience is characterised by noise, information overload, and crowded places with simple seating. When your flight is delayed or you have to wait for longer than two-to-three hours, the situation gets worse.
How can design and technology enhance and improve the travel experience, especially in the transfer zone/waiting/boarding area? What could be an interesting strategy for an airline to use, that would allow them to stand out and provide an enhanced experience in the waiting area?
obsideon is a refuge from the hustle and bustle of airports. As an additional service of the airline, this object, located in the terminal, is a personal waiting area. It offers a guaranteed personal relaxation room, where the user decides the level of his isolation by dimming or closing the object. Using the boarding pass to log in to the reserved object allows one’s personal up-to-date flight information to be displayed.
An OLED display operates as a light and information source. In case the traveler falls asleep due to stress or jetlag, a gentle reminder will advise that it is time to prepare for boarding. obsideon includes a personal locker and offers enough storage space for the traveller’s personal belongings.
It is foreseen that materials (such as timber) local to the region of the airline’s base would be used to construct obsideon, for the purpose of sustainable practice as well as helping the airline to build a better brand identity. obsideon helps the airline to differentiate themselves, builds brand loyalty, and improves the travel experience for the customer. |
