Kitchen Kids

The Kitchen Kids concept is a series of kitchen tools designed for use by children aged four to seven. Its aim is to encourage children to understand more about food and its preparation, setting them up for healthier lifestyles as adults.

Studies indicate that children who participate in the preparation of the family meal generally have a healthier lifestyle as adults. However, in Denmark, only 5% of children frequently participate in meal preparation. It therefore could be considered an imperative to invite children into the kitchen and teach them to be more critical about what they eat. This will give them a greater ability to choose a healthier lifestyle as adults.

The Kitchen Kids concept is a series of kitchen tools designed for use by children aged four to seven. The series consists of a knife, a vegetable peeler, a grating bowl, a mixing bottle for dressing, a chopping board, and a protective mitten that gives the parents peace of mind when the children use the sharp tools.

Colour application, as well as form, provides the sharp tools with a clear distinction between where they are ‘safe’ to hold and where they are ‘dangerous.’ The handles are made with rubber and have a characteristic shape that assists with grip. The grating tool can be fitted with a transparent bowl that catches the grated food. It can be leaned on its side (in two directions) during use for greater ease and comfort. It can also be used to serve the grated food.

In a world where everything needs to be fast and food often is something that is bought and conveniently heated in the microwave, the Kitchen Kids concept is of high relevance. It gives the generations of the future the possibility of obtaining a fundamental knowledge of healthy and unprocessed foods.
