Barista

To make a perfect cappuccino or latte takes time and requires skills. The Barista is a portable espresso maker for home use, designed to simplify and enhance the user experience.

In Sweden, inviting friends over to one’s home for coffee is a very common social gathering. It has been observed that people who have espresso machines don’t use them during these social coffee gatherings, but serve drip coffee instead because it’s more simple, more time-efficient, allows easy refills, and brews at the touch of a button. Thus, it doesn’t take the host away from the party.

The making of an espresso beverage is a procedure that is traditionally undertaken with much pride and joy. Originating in Italy, espresso drinks have grown in popularity all over the modern world. The aim of the Barista was to create an espresso machine that would allow all participants to experience the procedure of creating their own espresso drink, rather than the host being in charge of everyone’s beverages (and being left out of the conversation). The procedure was to be simple enough for all people to be able use and enjoy the machine, regardless of their knowledge of espresso making.

The Barista is a portable espresso maker, designed especially for home use, to enhance and simplify the user experience both indoors and outdoors. Unlike conventional espresso machines, the Barista allows multiple persons to take part in the experience of coffee making. It consists of a brewing unit, a docking station, and five espresso cups.

When in docking mode, this machine is attached to the wall outlet and performs like a conventional espresso machine, with beans ground for each individual cup. When in portable mode, the coffee beans are pre-ground in the kitchen and the pre-heated water is kept in a thermos in order to enhance portability and avoid unnecessary energy consumption.

The brewing unit is collapsed by pressing down the top part. To raise it, the user gives the handle a push and the machine will rise by itself to take on the brewing mode. The turning top allows the users to access the machine from all directions. Cups are placed on the tray and the top part of the machine is rotated to move the nozzle over each cup.
