Pond & Pine

Pond & Pine is a water-consumption monitoring system that adopts elements of emotional interaction and statistical data collection in its design concept. This is to remind people about water conservation.

Pond & Pine projects the image of a fish onto one’s hands while they wash them. The colour of the fish changes based on the volume of water used. The flow of water through the tap creates electrical energy via the embedded hydro-generator. This is used to operate the projection system as well as the water volume log without any use of power from other sources.

The fish and its fading colour serve as visual indicators of water consumption. When the consumption level rises above one litre, the fish disappears. The user is instinctively encouraged to think about the waste of natural resources and the consequences.

In addition to the product’s ability to communicate via emotional instinct, a statistical system records and reports the water-usage pattern and the level of water consumption. This stored data can be obtained via a low-power wireless channel, such as Bluetooth. The device and the integrated circuit are operated by self-generated power.

Pond & Pine was inspired by Chinese ink painting and landscapes. It reflects a spirit of peace with minimal content.
