Providing a contemporary take on the traditional hourglass, the LUX=Time hourglass lantern displays the passage of time with light rather than sand. The user is able to set the amount of time measured by the movement of light from top to bottom in order to suit their purposes.

The LUX=Time hourglass lantern works with the same functional theory as the traditional hourglass. The difference between them is that the original hourglass displays the time using gravity (with sand falling to the bottom), while the hourglass lantern displays the time with the strength of LED light. While the traditional hourglass only displays a standard length of time, the LUX=Time hourglass lantern enables users to prescribe the amount of time that they want displayed by adjusting the top and bottom pieces of the lantern. Since the user is able to set their desired time and recognise time by the flow of light, the hourglass lantern can be used for various purposes such as sleep-inducement, setting studying time for children and so on.

After turning the top or bottom piece to set the scale, which is located in the middle of the lantern, the user places the hourglass lantern down on its base. The light within the lantern will show in the top part of the lantern. The brightness will gradually move downwards at the pace set by the user. When the set time has passed, the light will have moved to the bottom of the lantern.
