Square Lamp – Lighting from Graphics
red dot
red dot award: design concept 2008
A public light as well as a graphics installation, Square Lamp is a solar-powered LED light for public squares that can communicate information and images while lighting an area.
Square Lamp is a light for public squares or plazas. Its shape is reminiscent of amushroom. LEDs are embedded in the underside of the mushroom. A solar panel on the top of the mushroom powers the light. The characteristics of LEDs have been harnessed to facilitate
changes in brightness and colour, and the display of information or graphics – for example the time, images or words. Members of the public can send images from their mobile phones to the lamp through Bluetooth and, with the payment of a coin, the image can be displayed by the lamp.
